How I think of Joe in Touching the Void

I think of Joe in many different ways during his journey in touching the void, during some places I feel pity and sadness towards him, and at other times I felt happy and glad for him. One of the times I felt this pity towards was when Joe broke his knee during his decent of the summit. The reason I felt so bad for Joe at this point was because he and simon were not expecting to have any ‘problems’ with the climb, and also, the fact that Joe had realised his death had become inevitable. After this incident Joe had to go through pain and agony to try to reach the glacier, this sudden turn of events bought sadness towards Joe upon me, as he had to experience the pain to such an extent even though he knew he was not going to make it to the glacier as he says ‘I knew it would kill me as well’ about he broken knee.’

I like the way you are responding personally to the story, and you are using some good examples! I particularly like your suggestion that Joe’s suffering is caused by the realisation that “death has become inevitable.”
